In CN, course instructors can create assessment rubrics to grade student assignments and provide criteria-based feedback. Students can view these rubrics when they submit an assignment and after the assignment is graded.
Step 1: Instructor creates the Rubric
A rubric is created while the instructor creates or edits an assignment.
Once you are on the assignment creation/edit form, click Add Rubric. You will have the option to:
1. import an existing rubric from a course, including the current course you are in,
2. import a rubric provided by your institution, or
3. create a new rubric
If you choose one of the first two options, you will be prompted to select a rubric. The rubric will then be inserted and you can make changes to it.
If you choose to create a new rubric, the blank rubric table will appear.
The following items must be filled out:
Rubric Name: Give your rubric a concise name
Criteria: A name and description of the criterion for that row
Rating: The score scales for each criterion. Each scale includes name, description, and points. By default, the points are generated automatically as 10 and 0, but can be changed.
Points: The total point value of that criterion. If you change this value, it will automatically change the point value of each score scale in that row, distributed evenly.
After the rubric is completed, review (especially, the point values), then click Save.
Step 2: Student submits an assignment with a Rubric
For a student to submit an assignment, if it has a rubric, it will be shown to the student along with the other assignment information. They can review the criteria and submit the assignment here:
Step 3: Instructor grades assignment with a Rubric
After a student makes a submission, the instructor can view it in the DropBox. To grade with a rubric, the instructor can click on the score box or the link that says Grade with Rubric:
The rubric will open. To grade the assignment, the instructor just needs to click on one of the score scales for each criterion. The total will be automatically calculated. Instructors can also leave a comment for each criterion in the Points column. When grading is complete, the instructor can click Save to submit the grade.
Step 4: Student views grade from Rubric
After a student receives a grade with a rubric, they can view it by clicking View Grade in Rubric:
Next, the graded rubric will open, and the student will be able to review their score as well as any comments the instructor made:
