If an assignment/GradeBook item is enabled as Group Assignment, students of a group will share submission(s), score(s), and feedback automatically. The Group Assignment feature makes both group assignment submission and grading more efficient.
The Group Assignment feature is available in both Classic and Pathway courses for the following assignment/GradeBook item types:
- File/Multimedia
- Post
- Poll
- Google Drive Assignment
Group Assignments work similarly across these assignment types. Therefore, this article will use a File/Multimedia assignment as an example.
Create a Group Assignment
When creating an assignment/GradeBook item of one of the types above, instructors first enable Group Assignment (see 1 below), then associate the assignment with a group set (see 2 below).
A group set consistents of multiple course groups. A student can only belong to one group within a group set for the share of submission(s), score(s), and feedback to work properly. Please refer to "4. Create and Manage Group Sets" in this support article to learn how to create a group set.
Note that once a group assignment has received student submissions, instructors will no longer be able to edit the group assignment settings.
Submit a Group Assignment
When a student submits the assignment on behalf of their group, they see a reminder, highlighting the submission will be shared with other students in that group. The rest of the submission is the same as a regular assignment.
After submission, every group member can access the submission from student DropBox (in Classic courses) or the corresponding assignment activity (in Pathway courses).
Grade a Group Assignment
Grading a group assignment is the same as grading a regular assignment. Instructors may use the group filter and assignment item name filter to locate a submission by a specific group.
After grading in DropBox, the same score and feedback will automatically be applied to every student in that group:
View Feedback on Group Assignment
After a group assignment is graded, all group members will receive a notification. Each of them can view the submission, score, and instructor feedback.
If the minimum points is met, all group members will get a green checkmark on the activity (in Pathway courses), or be able to move on to the next task or complete course (in Classic courses).
If CN Grader is used, all group members can comment on submitted PDF files.
Notes for Instructors:
1. After students complete a group assignment activity (receive a green checkmark), or complete a lesson or entire course with the group assignment as a component, the completion along with the green check, badge, or certificate will not be taken away even if you increase the activity completion requirement or decrease the group assignment score.
However, in Classic courses, if a group assignment is used as a visibility condition for another task, increasing the visibility condition score threshold or lowering a student's group assignment score will make the other task unavailable again.
2. If you do not want the same score and feedback to be automatically applied to every student in a group, you take one of the following approaches:
- Set up a regular assignment and ask every student to make a submission
- Set up a regular assignment, ask a group representative to make a submission, and grade following this guide.
