There are various types of analytics in a CN course, some of which are available to both instructors and students and some only available to course instructors. These analytics include the Anar Progress Bar, Members, Activities, Grades, Word Cloud, and Hashtag Analytics.
Anar Seeds Progress Bar
This Anar Seeds progress bar can be seen by all course members on the top of a Classic course page. It helps students see if their participation is on track measured by the daily Anar Seeds goal and their relative position compared to other course members. The bar could be in one of these three colors: green, red, or orange.
If the bar is red, the user is behind in terms of their daily Anar Seeds goal.
If the bar is green, the user is on track in terms of their daily Anar Seeds goal.
If the bar is orange, there is no course Anar Seeds goal set by the course instructor. Students may compare themselves to the course average and the course Anar Seeds champion.
The Anar Seeds Champion is the member with the most Anar Seeds in the course. They are shown on the right end of the bar unless instructors choose to hide it.
Member Analytics on Roster
Click Roster from the left course menu to access Members Analytics.
While all course members may view the roster, only instructors are able to export it into a CSV file, award badges from the roster, combine courses, edit Anar Seeds Privacy Settings, and view everyone's Course Completion data. *Students can only see their own Course completion data.
The Course Roster/Members page allows instructors to sort through the course members using a variety of parameters, such as Posts, Reflections, Last Visit, Badges, Course Completion, and Anar Seeds. Instructors can also click on the number links to view all of the course posts and reflections created by a specific course member. Reference the following numbers with the corresponding image below.
1. Search course members by name or by CN #
2. Export into a CSV file for further analysis. *Only available to instructor roles.
3. Sort members by Posts, Reflections, Last Visit, Badges, Course Completion, or Anar Seeds by clicking on the arrows next to each parameter.
Hashtag Analytics
Course instructors who set up instructor-suggested discussion topics are able to download user-based hashtag analytics. *This analytics is not available to students.
Click the little table icon next to "Instructor Suggested" in the Discussion Topics section.
Then, a CSV (similar to Excel) file will be automatically downloaded. Below is an example. From this file, course instructors are able to see which hashtags a specific course member has used. Please note that the calculation includes hashtags in both posts and reflections.
Course Analytics Dashboard
The Analytics dashboard offers comprehensive and easy-to-view data reports. It can be accessed from the left course menu.
The instructor dashboard includes the following specific analytics:
1. Course information
2. Discussion Topics Word Cloud
When a course has more than 5 used hashtags, the Discussion Topics analytics turn from keyword-based to hashtag-based, displaying up to 15 most used hashtags with the most used hashtags in bigger sizes. You can hover over a hashtag to view its top users.
3. Activities Analytics that compares a specific course member with the course average on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis
4. Grade analysis if a course uses GradeBook
5-6. various course member analytics
-
5. Most Active Students: The top 20% of students of the entire course (excluding the ones who have never visited the course) based on the course Anar Seeds, but with a maximum of 30 students.
-
6. Top Performing Students: The top 20% of students of the entire course (excluding the ones who receive 0% course grade) based on Course Grade, but with a maximum of 30 students.
7. Assignments analytics
The student dashboard presents data relevant to the current student.
Quiz Analytics
Besides being part of the Grade Analytics on the course analytics dashboard, quiz analytics can be found on the Quizzes page>>the pie chart icon.
CN also allows instructors to download student responses to each quiz question in a CSV file. This feature can be found on the Quizzes page>>the download icon.
Poll Results
The CN Poll feature automatically generates pie charts for answers to close-ended questions and word-could graphs for short answer questions. In addition to these visual analytics, if instructors need poll results for further analysis, the data can be exported into a CSV file from the poll settings dropdown>>Export Poll Results.
SmartLink-based Analytics
CN also provides SmartLink-based micro-analytics on file views/downloads and submissions. These analytics are embedded within the context and take instructors to view more detailed reports.
