AI Lesson/Activities Generation (in Pathway LMS Courses)

This Generative AI feature aims to help instructors create course content that is aligned with the learning objectives and integrates social discussions and quizzes to drive reflective thinking and engagement. The AI-generated activities are intended to give instructors course design ideas and streamline the course development process. 

Important Feature Logic

1. This feature is available in CN Pathway LMS courses. Instructors can add AI-generated activities anywhere in a lesson. 

2. The AI-generated activities follow the following structure:

1. Lesson Introduction (Rich Text Editor activity type) -- will not be generated if a lesson already has activities. 
2. Subtopic 1 explanation (Rich Text Editor activity type)
3. Reflection post on Subtopic 1 (Prompt Learners to Create Post activity type)
4. Subtopic 2 explanation (Rich Text Editor activity type)
5. Reflection post on Subtopic 2 (Prompt Learners to Create Post activity type)
6. Subtopic 3 explanation (Rich Text Editor activity type)
7. Reflection post on Subtopic 3 (Prompt Learners to Create Post activity type)
   ...Up to 6 Subtopics
8. Knowlege check quiz (Quiz activity type) 

3. All of the post and quiz activities have their default settings, instructors must review the AI-generated content and make necessary changes. 

4. Instructors have full control (i.e., edit, copy, unpublish, move, delete) over an AI-generated lesson or activity. 

Accessing the Feature

In a Pathway LMS course, instructors can Generate AI Activities in multiple places:

1. After creating a new lesson. You will find the purple button "Generate AI Activities".

2. From the lesson dropdown, choose "Generate AI Activities". The new activities will be added to the bottom of the lesson.

3. From the activity dropdown, choose "Generate AI Activities". The new activities will be added under the current activity. 

Generate AI Activities 

Step 1: Click "Generate AI Activities".

Step 2: You will see a pop-up window. It asks for

• The topic,
• The learning objectives,
• The number of subtopics to generate (from 1-6), 
• The target grade level

Although learning objectives are optional, the generated content will better meet your needs if you provide this information explicitly. Below is an example:

Step 3: Wait for the content to be created. Since there are several activities of multiple types, the process may take 1-2 minutes. You may switch to other tasks and check back later. Please make sure you do not close this message.

Step 4: After a minute or so, the entire AI-generated content will appear. Make sure you review each activity (i.e., title, description, completion setting), and make necessary edits. 

Below are a couple of examples of AI-generated activities - one explaining a subtopic and the other one prompting the creation of a reflection post. Instructors may add images, videos, links, and other resources to enrich the content. 

Review and Edit the Quiz

The knowledge check quiz is published by default. To review and edit it, instructors must visit the Quizzes page and unpublish the quiz. 

Then, you will be able to review and edit the quiz settings and each question. 

Note 1: By default, each quiz allows 3 attempts, does not have a time limit, and allows view submissions. Each question is worth 5 points. 

Note 2: The quiz only contains multiple-choice questions and each choice has AI-generated feedback. Please make sure to click "Edit Feedback" to review the AI-generated feedback.

After reviewing quiz settings and each question, remember to publish the quiz so that your students will be able to take the quiz.
