Rumi recommends academic connections and resources to individual users based on their profile information and preferences. These recommendations appear as posts on the user's Home feed. We offer the following recommendation services through Rumi:
Resource Recommendations
This service aims to recommend tailored teaching and learning resources to each user. Currently, we recommend OER (Open Education Resources) through integration with MERLOT. Below is a MERLOT resource recommendation post. It typically appears as one of the first posts on the user's Home feed.
By default, Rumi recommends MERLOT resources relevant to the skills/communities each user has added. You may use the "Preferences" setting from the top-right of a MERLOT resource recommendation post to specify your
- Subjects of interest (see 1 in the screenshot below), and/or
- Education level (see 2 in the screenshot below).
The recommendations will then be based on the customized settings.
If a user has no added skills/communities or preferences, such as a new user, Rumi will recommend resources on common topics, such as AI and Communication.
Community Recommendations
Through this service, Rumi recommends communities on CN to you. Six communities are recommended on each post.
Simply click the skill tags that you are interested in. Your selected tags will turn blue and they will be automatically added to the top of your CN Home feed.
From the top of your Home feed, select an added community to view members, conversations (posts and reflections), and credential opportunities from that community. You can also post to that community.
Connection Recommendations
Rumi also recommends other CN users who share similar skills and academic interests with you. You will encounter posts like the one below on your Home feed. Click "+Follow" if you would like to network with a user. You may also click their name to view their profile/ePortfolio and decide whether to follow them on that page.
The "Preferences" link in the upper-right corner allows you to define the recommendation criteria (i.e., skills, location, school, role). Rumi will then recommend users following your preferences.
Job Recommendations
Rumi recommends job opportunities based on a user's interested job title and location. When you first encounter this service on your Home feed, you see the form below. You are expected to verify the job title of your interest and location. These two fields are pre-filled with information from your profile/ePortfolio. You may modify the inputs before clicking "Continue".
Rumi will then ask you to select a popular job platform to view recommended jobs.
Here is an example of selecting Indeed in the previous step. You will be taken to the job platform to view job openings that match your preferences.
How the services are displayed
Each page refresh or page load gets new recommendation posts on your Home feed. By default, Resource Recommendations appear the most often, followed by Community Recommendations and Connection Recommendations, and Job Recommendations the least. You can adjust the recommendation frequency of a specific service by clicking thumb up (i.e., increasing the frequency) or thumb down (i.e., decreasing the frequency) at the bottom a post.
Disable A Recommendation Service
Individual users can disable a recommendation service from either the three-dot icon in the upper-right corner of a post, or
from Rumi Settings on the CN navigation bar.
Institution admins can disable Rumi recommendation services for all Channel members from CN Channel>>Rumi>>Settings. Read this article to learn more.
