Guideline badges are used to show students badges that they may earn. When a badge is set as a guideline badge, it will appear on students’ ePortfolios in grayscale. When hovering over the badge, the student will see the guidelines on how they can earn the badge. We encourage institutions and instructors to set guideline badges to motivate students and better guide them through their learning journey. 

Set Up Guideline Badges from the Institution (for CN Channel Admins)

STEP1: Go to the Badges, Certificates, and Transcripts page in CN Channel. Under the badges tab, find the badge on the Institution Badges table that you want to use as the guideline badge and click on the Guideline Badge link in the Actions column.

STEP2: Fill out the form on the Set Guideline Badge window that will appear. You will need to: 1 – check the box to set the badge as a guideline badge, 2 – enter the guidelines that the students should follow to be able to receive the badge, and 3 – click the SUBMIT button once you’re finished.

After the guideline badge has been set, you should see that the star icon next to the Guideline Badge link should be filled in now. The badge in grayscale should now appear one members’ ePortfolios. Please note that after a user has met the requirements, you still need to award the badge to the user as you normally would.

Set Up Guideline Badges from a Course (for Course Instructors)

STEP1: Go to the Badges page from your course. Then find the badge that you want to use as the guideline badge and click on the Guideline Badge link in the Actions column.

STEP2: Fill out the form on the Set Guideline Badge window that will appear. You will need to: 1 – check the box to set the badge as a guideline badge, 2 – enter the guidelines that the students should follow to be able to receive the badge, and 3 – click the SUBMIT button once you’re finished.

After the guideline badge has been set, you should see that the star icon next to the Guideline Badge link should be filled in now. The badge in grayscale should now appear on your students’ ePortfolios.Please note that after a user has met the requirements, you still need to award the badge to the user as you normally would.

Viewing Guideline Badges on ePortfolio (for ePortfolio Owners)

If your course or institution has set up any guideline badges, you will see the badge in the Badges section of your ePortfolio. Guideline badges appear in grayscale to show that you have not yet earned the badge.

Hover over the badge to view the guidelines set by your instructor/institution admin. You will also see from where the badge will be awarded to you (either one of your courses or your institution) at the bottom of this window. Follow the guidelines listed here so that you can receive the badge. Please note that the process isn’t automatic, so the badge won’t be awarded to you until the instructor/institution admin awards the badge to you. 

Once the badge is awarded to you, you should see the badge in full color on your ePortfolio.
