This guide shows how CN Channel Admins and Instructors can enable Paid Certificates. Once enabled, students will need to pay before they can obtain their course completion certificate.
Step 1: Admin Setup Certificate
From your CN Channel:
- Click on Badges, Certificates, and Transcripts from the left-hand menu.
- Select the Certificates tab.
- Click Manage Auto-Awarded Certificates.
- Click on Create New Certificate.
You’ll be asked to choose a certificate type:
- Use CN Provided Template
- Use Self-Created Custom Template
Choose the one you want. You’ll then be able to edit the certificate.
Step 2: Mark Certificate as Paid
Inside the certificate editor:
- Scroll to the bottom of the page.
- Check the box: Mark this as a paid certificate.
- Enter the price (in USD) in the field that appears.
Below the paid certificate checkbox, you’ll see this message:
Hint: If you haven’t configured a payment gateway before, click here to set it up.Click the link to set up your institution’s payment gateway. This step is required for payments to be processed.
Step 3: Instructor Choose Certificate in the Course
Once admin configured a paid certificate, instructors can choose that certificate in their courses as a course completion reward. Both Classic and Pathway courses allow this option:
Once a paid certificate is selected by the instructors, students will receive this certificate only after successfully making the payment.
Step 4: Student Experience with Paid Certificates
After completing a course with a paid certificate:
- If a student has NOT paid:
- A pop-up will appear asking them to complete payment.
- The certificate stays locked until payment is received.
2. By clicking Pay Now, students will be redirected to a payment gateway that was configured by the admin. (i.e., PayPal)
Once student successfully completed the payment:
- The certificate is unlocked
- It is added to their CN ePortfolio

Students can navigate to their CN ePortfolio and head over to the documents section to access their certificates:
Step 5: Accessing the Certificate Again
If a student closes the initial pop-up, they can still access the certificate by:
(Pathway course view) Clicking the Course Completion as part of the Activities.
(Classic course view) Clicking the green check mark icon to check your completion status.
This re-triggers the certificate access pop-up.
